Late Summer Burnout
As we reach mid-August, many people expect to feel rested and recharged, excited to enjoy the last weeks of summer. However, some people may find themselves mentally drained, emotionally flat, or overwhelmed. For many, summer brings disrupted routines, constant activity, childcare challenges, and social commitments combined with the pressures to make the most of summer. By August, this can lead to feelings of emotional exhaustion and/or burnout.
Burnout can show up when you have a lot on your plate without time dedicated to adequate self-care or support. Signs that may indicate you are experiencing burnout are:
You feel more irritable or impatient than usual
Small tasks feel unusually overwhelming
Your sleep is off, even if you're tired
You're withdrawing from social plans you once looked forward to
You feel numb or detached, even during relaxing moments.
While burnout can feel overwhelming and result in a lack of motivation, we have highlighted some ways you can manage burnout in your day to day:
Acknowledge It: Pay attention to the signals your mind and body are sending.
Simplify: Let go of non-essential plans, say no without guilt - your energy has limits.
Re-Establish Routines: Consistent routines can help regulate your mood.
Small Joys: Practice mindfulness, being in the moment and grounding yourself.
Talk It Out: Sharing your emotions with a trusted person can reduce the mental load you are carrying.
